Bruny Island is a great day trip from Hobart and with good planning, many of the islands foodie and natural highlights can be experienced. Self drive from Hobart – hop in the car with a good appetite, walking shoes, water, and esky or freezer bag for provisions, a jacket and your camera. Head to Kettering to await the vehicular ferry. Grab a coffee at the local Gateway café and enjoy the 20 minute ferry crossing.
First stop is Bruny Island Cheese and Beer Co for tastings. A delicious selection of artisan cheese, craft beers, preserves, relishes, books and more are available for purchase. The Neck Lookout and viewing platform offers spectacular 360 degree views across the island’s narrow isthmus.
Bruny Island Berry Farm at Adventure Bay is a great spot for morning tea (open seasonally) and a stroll along the pretty beach opposite. Adventure Bay a little further down the road is another great place for a beach stroll and coastal photo opportunities. Bruny Island Chocolate Co sells handmade fudge made on the property.
Travel to the far end of Adventure Bay road to find Bruny Island Cruises and Seafood Restaurant. Cruises depart daily at 11am. Continue South to Bruny Island Premium Wines for wine tastings and lunch overlooking the family owned and operated vineyard.
Further South you’ll arrive at the iconic Cape Bruny Lighthouse. Take a Lighthouse tour for the ultimate in magnicent scenery. Lighthouse tours occur regularly throughout the day.
Drive back towards the ferry, stopping at Bruny Island Honey along the way for some ‘liquid gold’. Pop into Get Shucked Oyster Bar for a platter au natural or fried with dressings and chips. Drive through window available too.
The House of Whisky is your last stop of the day to sample fine Tasmanian whisky and gin.
